Arts in Basic Curriculum Steering Committee Adopts Profile of the South Carolina Graduate
The Arts in Basic Curriculum (ABC) Steering Committee has formally adopted the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Prepared by the SCASA Superintendents’ Roundtable, the Profile is a description of the knowledge, skills and characteristics that are critical for South Carolina’s graduates to compete in a global economy.
The ABC Steering Committee joins the following organizations in adopting the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate:
- SC Chamber of Commerce
- SC Council on Competitiveness
- SC Education Oversight Committee
- SC State Board of Education
- SC State Department of Education
- TransformSC Network of Schools and Districts
The ABC Project is a statewide collaborative effort dedicated to ensuring that every student in the state pre-k – college has access to a quality arts education, including dance, drama, music, visual arts, and creative writing. The Project is directed by the SC Arts Commission, the SC Department of Education, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Winthrop University. Members from these organizations join other state leaders from education, arts, business, and government to form ABC’s 60 member Steering Committee. The Steering Committee meets three times each year to discuss initiatives for the group.
The ABC Project led the effort to create a dance educator certification program, established the South Carolina Center for Dance Education at Columbia College, developed the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Framework, and developed the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Standards.
The arts are a vital part of the “World Class Knowledge” a South Carolina graduate needs to be college, career, and citizenship ready. The South Carolina Council on Competitiveness and TransformSC look forward to a continued partnership with the ABC Project.
